Let's talk Green Transport

There are a lot of challenges facing intra-European road transport. Among them are market-related or seasonal volume fluctuations, capacity constraints, cargo security or lack of truck drivers causing an increase in costs.

There are a lot of challenges facing intra-European road transport. Among them are market-related or seasonal volume fluctuations, capacity constraints, cargo security or lack of truck drivers causing an increase in costs. Apart from economic aspects, geopolitical ones are playing an equally important role. The short-term/long-term impact of Brexit, trade wars and sanctions, minimum wages for international truckers or EU transport goals to reduce significantly CO2 emission must be taken to consideration to manage supply chains in an optimal way in the future.

If you care for the environment and wish to bring down your company's CO2 emission, then shortsea shipping is a must to consider as the most environmentally friendly form of transport. Recently Unifeeder has entered into a unique transport agreement with Ranheim Paper & Board AS, Greencarrier, and Green Cargo. "The agreement includes transport of paper from Trondheim, via the port of Drammen and Rotterdam, to Vienna in Austria by shortsea and rail instead of a truck. The new agreement helps to reduce the use of a truck from 2400 kilometers to only 24 kilometers per route, thereby lowering the CO2 emission by approximately 62%.” Until then Ranheim Paper & Board AS has exclusively used trucks to transport paper. There are more and more companies which have a strong desire to become environmentally friendly and apart from economic aspects, reduction of CO2 emission is becoming also a deciding factor to use shortsea solutions. Shortsea shipping due to the size of container vessels, extensive network and frequent connections can be a sustainable alternative to road transport, circumventing Europe’s overcrowded highways. Some of the shortsea vessels operating in Northern Europe can take as much as 800 truckloads on board and usage of 45’HC pallet-wide containers, which hold exactly the same amount of cargo as traditional trailer 33 EU pallets or 26 UK pallets, allows to make an easy conversion from road to the sea. Therefore, by choosing shortsea, you can make a valuable contribution to less congestion, fewer emissions and less risk of traffic accidents on the European roads.

Eco-friendly sustainable transport solution is not possible to implement without close cooperation between all partners in the supply chain – shippers/receivers, shortsea carriers, rail/truck operators, container terminals, ports or freight forwarders. There is also stronger support needed on European and national political level to not only talk about shifting from road to sea but to take some real actions. In contrary to political directives and EU goals to reduce CO2 emission, traditional road transport has still high share on European transport market. Unifeeder is pleased to be a part of this year TransLogistica Poland exhibition, which is the biggest in CEE business event for everyone professionally associated with transport, freight forwarding, and logistics. Therefore, the event is an excellent opportunity to meet with Unifeeder's representatives, discuss the environmental impact of shortsea solutions and start cooperation.
