Shipping Solutions EAM is seeking a proactive and self-driven team member for our Hamburg office. This role focuses on customs compliance, reporting, and process coordination rather than operational customs clearance. 

Working as Customs Expert at Shipping Solutions EAM 

As a Customs Expert, your primary responsibility is to coordinate the implementation of customs requirements and ensure adherence to customs regulations across Europe. The role is designed around compliant processes, reporting requirements, and cross-functional support, rather than day-to-day customs clearance execution.

In this position, you will work closely with local offices, cargo execution teams, business stakeholders, internal IT, and external providers to help ensure compliant and efficient customs reporting and processes. You will act as a key point of contact for customs-related questions and help drive scalable and sustainable solutions across the business.

This position is based in Hamburg, Germany, and we are seeking candidates already residing in the Hamburg area. You should be prepared for occasional travel depending on business needs.

You report to the Customer Service Excellence Director and collaborate with various teams and functions across Shipping Solutions EAM.

Key responsibilities 

• Maintain regular contact with national and European customs authorities regarding reporting requirements for cargo carried on DP World Shipping Solutions vessels
• Coordinate with local cargo execution departments to ensure adherence to customs rules and regulations
• Act as a point of contact for local offices in case of customs-related questions or requests
• Represent DP World Shipping Solutions in dealings with customs authorities as the designated point of contact
• Coordinate with internal IT teams on system solutions required for customs reporting
• Coordinate and align customs reporting requirements with external IT providers, such as Descartes
• Gather business and customs requirements across geographies and help translate them into functional solutions
• Support implementation, adoption, and continuous improvement of customs-related processes and reporting solutions

Who are you?

You have 3–5 years of experience with customs procedures, ideally with a focus on Germany, and may have gained this experience in shipping, logistics, freight forwarding, customs brokerage/agency, or a similar customs-focused environment.

Furthermore, we expect you to:

• Have solid knowledge of customs regulations and reporting requirements
• Be motivated to build expertise in other EU countries where DP World Shipping Solutions operates
• Have proficiency in English at a professional level, both verbal and written
• Have strong German language skills to communicate effectively with local stakeholders and authorities
• Be able to coordinate tasks across different business teams, including IT, cargo execution, and customer-facing functions
• Be comfortable working independently and taking ownership of your area of responsibility

• The ability to translate business and customs requirements into functional needs for IT solutions
